At the Gates is a re-imagining of a banner from the women’s suffrage movement that read “The Young Are At the Gates,” text that was taken from an article written by Lavinia Dock in “The Suffragist” in 1917. The piece draws a connection from the contemporary women’s movement (exemplified by Me Too and the Women’s March), to the women’s suffrage movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This piece serves as a warning that the women of America are coming to take their rightful place in our democracy.
